EEMUA® - Engineering Equipment and Materials Users Assocication®
The EEMUA is a premiere worldwide resource for alarm management information, through their Publication 191 - Alarm Systems - A Guide to Design, Management and Procurement. The first edition was a cooperative effort with the ASM Consortium®, the Abnormal Situation Management Consortium®, (see below), released in 1999. The second edition will be released on June 21st of this year. Publication 191 includes guidelines for alarm system design and performance measurement. The guide can be purchased here.
ASM® Consortium - Abnormal Situation Management® Consortium
The ASM Consortium is devoted to researching and establishing techniques for avoidance and successful management of plant upsets. Many of the people involved with the ASM Consortium were on the forefront of what would become the field of alarm management.
NAMUR® - Interessengemeinschaft Automatisierungstechnik der Prozessindustrie®
NAMUR is an international organization of process automation technology users, headquartered in Germany with most members from Germany and neighboring countries. The NAMUR NA 102 Worksheet (abstract) includes alarm system design procedures, recommendations for alarm performance monitoring , and functionality suggestions for control equipment vendors. HSE® - Health and Safety Executive®
The HSE is Great Britain's health and safety regulatory body. The HSE COMAH® (Control of Major Accident Hazards®) division is devoted to better industrial accident prevention and recovery. The HSE reviews industrial incidents of concern to Great Britain and has produced compelling reports on many high-profile incidents, such as Texaco Pembroke and BP Grangemouth.
ISA® - The Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society®
ISA is a 33,000-member global, nonprofit, educational organization connecting people and ideas in automation. The ISA SP.18 Committee, is developing an alarm management best practices guide. UCDS® - User Centered Design Services®/Ian Nimmo
Ian Nimmo established UCDS as a consultancy for optimal design of all things operations. As a founder and the initial Program Director of the ASM Consortium, Ian has a rich history that he applies with vigor. From staff load assessments, to HMI design, to control room construction, Ian is one of the world's foremost authorities. Ian has written numerous papers and articles for major publications and events. Most of his articles and papers can be found here.
D-RoTH® - "State-of-the-Practice Alarm Management Technology and Training"™
D-RoTH is an engineering firm founded by Doug Rothenberg, who served as the lead technical controls representative of BP Amoco® to the EEMUA 191 task force and the ASM Consortium. D-RoTH specializes in DCS alarm management and DCS operator display design. Doug is the official alarm management training resource for the ISA.
Mustang Engineering®
Mustang Engineering is a complete engineering services business, based out of Houston, Texas. They dedicate a team of engineers to abnormal condition management, led by Bridget Fitzpatrick, who spearheaded Celanese's participation in the ASM Consortium.
Beville Engineering®
Beville Engineering is a human factors engineering and analysis services firm specializing in the refining and petrochemical industries. Beville was founded in 1983 by David Strobhar, an expert in human factors who performed the analysis of the Three Mile Island incident in the early stages of his career.
